Abstract: The agriculture in Indonesia accounts for 40 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product which is the largest sector of the economy. Despite this fact, the rice production is still short of meeting the dom :stic requirement. The home consump-tion is supplemented by imports incurring an expenditure of one _tenth of the national total. Hence, the rice production has to be increased. Irrigation is the critical and costly input for increasing the rice production. The second Five Year Plan (1974 to 1979) and the Third Five Year Plan (1979 - 1984) allotted one fifth of `the total budget to the agriculture and Irrigation Sector. Under the framework of the Plan, much emphasis is laid on the multipurpose river basin development schemes, especially those exploiting the perennial Irrigation water resources, The Sungai Dareh Sitiung Irrigation Pro 1e01 was conceived' and formulated to resettle 10,000 inhibitant families from the Wonogiri area. The project is expected I besides to improve the living standard of the existing 6,000 Farm Families in the project area.
