Single storey shear wall_;, solid or having an opening placed symmetrically about vertical central line hove been analysed by a method of 'Equations of Equilibrium' as applied to analogous grid of the shear walls. The results obtained by this method for a later-ally loaded solid shear wall are compared with those obtained by Kazimi using 'Line Solution Technique.' Shear wails having an opening symmetrically pla-ced about vertical central line have then been analysed foe three different positions of the opening. For each position of the opening three different loading c.m''-itions have been considered to study the effect of type of load. The loading conditions considered are (a) Para-bolic load at top of the wall, (b) Uniform load at top of the wall,. and (c) Horizontal joint-load on the mass at the well., Shear and normal stress variations for each posi-tion of the opening for each loi,.ding condition are plotted and compared with those obtained by method of Piers using simple theory of bending. Viodol tests also have been conducted to compare the theoretical and experi-ental values of deflections and ultimate load.en_US
