Surge tanks are provided in water conductor systems of power stations, to dampen the surges and water hammer pressure caused by sudden rejection or demand of load. The differential equations governing the hydraulic transients of mass oscilla-tions in surge tank can be solved by Arithmetical Integration of finite difference equations which, however, is highly time consuming and labourious . Digital computer is one of the best tools to handle such problems. It is advantageous from both time and accu-racy point of view.. Computer programmes are developed for simple, restricted-orifice and differential types of surge tanks, based on Presselts method in Ebrt an - V to study surge problems pertaining to load acceptance or load rejec-tion to give minimum downsurge and maximum upsurge for instantaneous valve closure respectively. Then turbine and governor characteristics are incorporated by use of a Sub-routine....en_US
