Issue Date: 1984
Abstract: The safety of the important structure like a dam must be ensured at all costs, considering the magnitude of the economic loss and personal hardship that would result from its failure. Past experiences have revealed the inadequacy of pseudostatic methods of aseismic design. Consequently, reliable analytical procedures and criteria are needed for the design of new dates and the safety evaluation of exist-ing dais. The refined analytical procedures like Finite Element Method can be used, but the analysis being very sophisticated, requires the specialised knowledge of the subject. On the other hand simplified procedures have their own limitations and are appropriate only for developing preliminary designs of dams.....
