Abstract: The work reported herein was performed in the School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering, University of Roorkee as a Master of Engineering thesis under the guidance of Dr. Sharnsher Prakash, Reader in Civil Engineering, School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering, University of Roorkee, Roorkee. The author wishes to express his deep and sincere gratitude to Dr. S. Prakash for his valuable guidance, keen interest in the work and encouragement throughout the preparation of this dissertation The author is highly indebted to Dr. Jai Krishna, Director School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering University of Roorkee for making available the facilities for carrying out this work.
