Abstract: The present set of investigations were carried out to study the behaviour of a long folded plate shell with regard to the longitudinal reinforcement and thus to suggest an economical and efficient way of designing it. The behaviour of this type of folded plate was investigated in elastic and plastic state so that its ulti. made strength can be properly predicted. Various other problems connected with the design of a single span simply supported folded plate roof are also reviewed briefly. For the proposed study three full scale models of a trough type single bay long folded plate shell formed by joining three horizontal and two inclined plates, built into solid end traverses, were casted. The end traverses were simply supported throughout their length on a solid brick wall (Figure 6.1) Model No. 1 carried reinforcement concentrated near the lower most portion of the tension zone. Model failed in transverse bending and shear at an ultimate load of 13.5 tons. Model No. 2 was provided with the reinforcement uniformly distributed in the tension zone but allowing the maximum stress in steel as 18000 psi (safe allowable stress) This also failed in shear at junction of shell with end traverse at a load of 14,5 tons, 1 Model Mo. 3 was reinforced with tension steel grouped near the bottom of tension zone. The model is further reinforced against shear. This model gave a yield strength of 145 tons and ultimate strength of 18.7 tons,
