dc.description.abstract | No-fines concrete finds its main use as a wall- material, which usually takes about 1/5 to 1/4 the cost of house-construction; and as such, its use in building-construction will faifly affect the overall cost of construction. Since brick-ballast forms a good and cheap substitute as coarse aggregates, and is readily available in several parts of India, it would be interesting and useful to study the properties of no-fines brick-ballast concrete as a wall-material. In the present investigations for thesis work, an attempt has been made to study various physical and structural properties of no-fines concretes, using brick-ballast as coarse-aggregates. About 400 Zoos, of 6"-cubes of no-fines brick-ballast concrete, with various A/C - (Aggregate-cement) ratios, were cast, using different W/C (Water - Cement) ratios by weight, to obtain maximum compressive' strengths at optimum W/C-ratios. Some useful generalisations in the form of a law for maximum compressive strength at optimum W/C-ratios fo various A/C - ratios have been made. With optimum W/C-ratios for each A/C - ratio, several specimens - beams, cubes, cylinders, briquettes etc"-were cast and tested to obtain a co-relation of different struc-tural properties of no-fines brick-ballast concrete with its 28 - day cube strength. This gives us some preliminary idea about the structural uses and limitations of this new material* The coefficients of thermal expansion and contraction due to shrink'age do play an important role in no-fines brick-ballast concrete-, and this has been studied here. Also, the capillary-rise of moisture in this no-fines concrete has been studied and discussed. Finally, its uses and limitations as a new wall-material are also discussed* | en_US |
