Abstract: Large variety of makes and models in the heavy construction machinery in India, especially of imported origin, has made their operation and maintenance very complex-. The solution lies in standardisation of construction equipment at the time of planning and procurement. This affords convenience and economy-. Standardisation of vital assemblies such as engines, trans-missions and tyres besides the standardisation of makes and models of equipment, can lead to substantial saving in the ownership and operating cost of equipment while improving the productivity of the equipment fleet at the same time:. The improved mechanical availability of equipment fleet has definite advantage in shorten--ing the construction period which is so vital to national interest..
