Abstract: At the planning stage of the hydel projects, se1gction of type of hydraulic turbine and dimensioning of hydropower station is to be carried out, based upon the experience of exist-ing installations. In this dissertation critical study of various practices] vogue through out the world and trends in selection of type of turbines and preliminary dimensioning of hydropower stations has been made. Applicability of various types of hydraulic turbines has been covered and factors for choosing the turbine in overlapping feasible region for two types have been outlined. C--'se studies have been presented for selection of type of turbines in the overlapping feasible region of heads. It is intended to cover as many practices as possible, so that the de-signer may make his own interpretations rather than follow the curves of one or the other manufacturer, and may have a basis for judgement of the accuracy and reliability. It is felt that improving the planning engineers' working tools would prove well worth the efforts.
