Abstract: | With more and more emphasis on higher standard of sanitation, rapid increase in population and ind-ustrialisation of the country the problem of the Control of Water Pollution in Indian. Rivers is assum-ing great importance day by day. , From the point of view of waste disposal the various rivers in the country present a wide variety of conditions. The physical characteristics of the rivers and the climatic conditions are different along the whole length and breadth of the country. Innumer-able types of wastes having quite the opposite phys-ical, chemical and biological properties are contin-uously added to the bodies of streams. Under such circumstances the progress of self-purification depends upon the quality, the quantity and the frequency of the wastes added and the(solvent position of the stream. Upto what extent is the rate of progress aff-ected by the variation in river characteristics and how can these be improved to achieve a higher rate has been discussed in this paper. 1 |
