Abstract: The coastal plains occupy a large part of the land surface with large potential for agriculture development. The problems of irrigated agriculture in such areas are much different from those of interior regions and involve much more complexities. The sea has a large affect on the climate, hydrology and groundwater of such areas. This study attempts to bring out such affects and identifies the complex problems specific to such areas. The planning and management of irri-gated agriculture needs special treatment. This study brings out the various important factors , the methodology and cri-teria for determining the crop suitability, determining the water requirement of crops, salinity management, water app-- lication methods and related water use and management aspects that are specific to low lying coastal areas with a view to improve productivity from irrigated agriculture and reduce adverse effects.
