Abstract: Spillway sections are of complex geometric shape. These, generally, have wide base compared to the height. The present day practice of structural design of spillway section based on the conventional method of an ySis does not give correct distribution of stresses, Evaluation of realistic distribution and nature of stresses are, therefore, necessary. This can be done by considering the concrete dam and the rock foundation as a single massive body which will resemble an elastically embedded tazritilever beam. Analysis of this body can then be done by adopting more accurate and versatile technique like Finite element method. This dissertation presents a finite element study of stress distribution in the spillway section of the I ngpi Dam, Another problem associated with spillways is the anchorage problem of trunnion rods in the spillway pier. There is no direct method of analysing the stresses around the anchorage. An attempt has been made in this dissertation to analyse the stresses around the anchorage -n t e Spillway pier of Longpi dam and to suggest an optimal location for anchorage of the trunnion rods.
