Majority of earlier dams have been con:itructed on good foundations. It is thus becoming increasingly evident that futur : dame may have to be constructed on inferior sites having faults in foundations and even on those where a remote possibility of movement of fault exists. Thus engineers may have to design and construct the dams an such foundations. A prequisite for evaluating suitable design for such site is an deep understanding •of the mechanism of failure of a concrete block during fault movement. The dissertation incorporates experimental analysis by plaster of paris models and wax models to study and illustrate the structural behavior of a dam block in case of movements of fault existing in the foundation. Technique of construction of wax model was developed which has proved quite an effective tool to illustrate the pattern of f& ilure in th , model in such cases. These studies are supplemented by pho-~oalastic model testing. The study also briefly indicates the ways to minimize hazards associated with fault.en_US
