Issue Date: 1980
Abstract: The pumping units for _ irrigation in rural India - having very poor ef tciencies and thereby resulting in poor porformancc and higher energy bills. The present energy crisis fermented out of limited oil inports and shortage of electricity has focused the attention of better management of the resources of the country. This i.truestigation is aimed at discovering the efficiencies of pumping units in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The basic objectives for the investigations have been to investigate and evaluate the field performance of pumping units, to suggest modifications for improving the existing efficionce s. Laboratory pumping units have been conducted to obtain the actual characteristics of pumping units. Head loss through different fittings and corresponding power consumptions have b;.:eri discovercMd. T1- eflicic ncy of prime mover, F lectric motor and diesel engine alongwith pump • performance has been determined. These tests have been repeated for eight sites . in the region. The pumping Index defined as Rs/.00,000 litre/m depth has been discovered for the. energy consumption performance.
