Abstract: The openings such as galleries in dams usually run in the longituiinal direction, parallel to the , axis of dam and are provided for access, inpsection, grouting and drainage etc. Other oe ni ngs , like outlets, sluices etc. run in the transverse direction and serve the purpose of releasing water from reservoir, for irrigation and flood regulation. Besides, there, are openings to house drain holes, air vent, stair well and shaft etc. The shape of those openings - is usually circular, elliptical or combination of rectangular and arc of circle. Due to formation of openings in the dams stress concentrations occur, which necessitate a n accuarte assess- merit of stresses around them, for proper design. Expressions are available, for exact stress analysis of circular and elliptical sections. For rectangular openings, some stress concentration co-efficieni3 are available, which are based on photoelasticity results. These data are not sufficient to design the rectangular opening; of various sizes in darn. In this dissertation, the data regarding the sizes of o ~enings were collected, based on the openings found in 42 dams. The stress concentration factors due to vertical or horizontal normal stress, for rectangular openings of wick th to height ratio 1/3, 0.5, 2/3, 0.7 and 1.0 have been obtained by using numerical technique, the finite element method. The analytical results of stress concentration factors have been verified experimentally for openings circular and square by. using electrical strain gage tochinque . It is noted that the analytical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The results of the stress concentration factors obtained analytically have been presented in the form of tables and curves which can be conve.e nt,y used for design work.
