Integrated use of surface and-groundwater is a concept aiming at conservation and, control of water. There are numerous possibilities of combining these two resources, however a careful and detailed economic study only would lead to optimal . solution.Oost func-tions of various components of surface and grouril water would therefore be useful in formulating mathematical models of optimization to carry out economic analysis for various Alternatives expeditiously, yet with reaso-nable accuracy. Cost functions have been developed for certain components of canal such as earth work, lining and land width for uhlined and as well lined seperately. I.lthough these cost functions are primarily intended to be utilized for estimating t1~e distributaries and minors, there is no bar in extending these relations to main canals and branches with suitable modifications.' Cost of a tubewell is a function of discharge. The optimal capacity of atube well would give minimum unit cost of ground water. Analysis has been made to find out the optimal capacity of well that could be adopted in the• Indo Gangetic Plain.en_US
