dc.description.abstractAn experimental study has beer' made to evaluate the effect of heat treatment on the deformation behaviour under compression of an unalloyed hypoeutectic (CN3.8%) white cast iron in the form of cylindrical pebbles. The study was conducted essentially to assess the controlling parameter(s) that would influence the deformation behaviour. The compression test data was duly suppw lemented.by hardness measurements# optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy; To make the study comprehensive, data generated,in the past on the effect of heat»treatment on wear resistance ,,as also included in the present report. A critical analysis of the data reveals that graphitization is the primary controlling parameter in influencing both the deform oration behaviour and wear resistance. A definitecorrelationship exists between deformation behaviour and wear resistance. For attaining the optimum in terms of wear resistance, the useful ranges of compressive strength and % strain have been deduced and the optimum heat treating condition evolved.. The manner in which graphitigC~tion enhances or adversely affects the deformation behaviour/wear resistance, has been brought out. The results p which are of considerable significance, have been analysed based on fundamental considerattons. ABBRen_US
