dc.description.abstractOf the seven groups of the clay minerals, Kaolins, Illites and Montmorillonites have common occurrence Allopanes, Vermiculites, Chlorites and micas may be found in a clays in small quantity, but they do not influence the properties of the predominating minerals much . Hence the present study is confined to Kaolins Illites and Montmorillonites only and for laboratory test Kaolin, bentonite, Dhanaury clay and black cotton soil were chosen. The analysis of the results reveals the importance of the minerological aspect of the problem. It also shores that none of the existing theories can explain the beha-viour of all clays, and that coefficient of consolidation varies with degree of consolidation and the applied press-ures. Nature of this variation depends on the nature of clay. The study also indicates close relationship between the compression index and the activity of clays. which in turn depends on the minerological composition of the clay. The compressive strain has linear relationship with logarithm of the effective stress. Log of strain rate was observed to have linear relationship v ith time in case of Kaolin only. ii The present study indicates that for correct interpretation of the test results mineralogical analysis of the clay is quite important. Further studies in this direction may one day enable us to have a simple , general model for quick analysis of the settlement problem.en_US
