Pressure and surge shafts are important appurtenant works of Hydro power schemes involving underground power stations and long pressure tunnels. in view of the present emphasis on hydroelectric development in the country, more and more schemes involving shafts are likely to be taken up. Construction of Ct shafts isLdifficult operation a requiring special equipments and techniques. Due to wide variation in rock conditions, and the slope, size, and length of shafts, construction problems at each site are unique. Even so valuable guidance in evolving suitable construction techniques and finding solution to difficult problems is provided by the study of shafts already constructed or under construction. In order to help provide guide lines for future construction planning of shafts, construction methods, adopted in recently constructed shafts have been studied and evaluated.en_US
