The existing literature on resistance to flow in rigid open channel was reviewed in 2 parts, (1) emperical and (2) Semi theoretical approach. Dimensional analysis was used to find out the dimensionless parameters affecting the friction factor I in rigid open channel and it is found that is a function of Re and h•.. In order to verify that _ 0 ( Re, k ), experiments were carried out s in smooth channel and rough channel with 2 different sizes of roughness ( d=1.4 mm, d = 2.415 mm )separa--tely in glass sided tilting rectangular channel of ft wide and 40 ft long. The graph of j Vs Re with respective k was plotted with our experimental data and was found to be quite similar to the graph for friction factor in pipe flow. Equations for determining " ' " in smooth and rough channels for different types of flow were developed by using the Logarithamic Velocity Distri--bution Law.en_US
