Abstract: The peak flood that has to be adopted for the design of hydraulic structures is of considerable importance in the planning of Water Resources projects. In order to be able to arrive at the values of the design flood a study of the available data has to be conducted and analysed to get the desired result. In this dissertation the various methods available have been discussed bringing out their, suitability and limitations based on the available data. When the data of peak flood for reasonable duration is available the frequency analysis has to be carried out for this purpose many probability distribution functions are available and the best distribution function has to be known to arrive at the predicted values of the probability function. Six probability distribution functions viz. Normal, Log-Normal 2, Log-Normal 3, Gamma 2, Gamna3, Gumbel have been used to find out the best fit distribution for eight (8) stations of Iraqi rivers and the best fit distribution functions arrived at. These fit distribution functions have also been used to determine the flood values with a return period of 100 years.
