Abstract: | The problem of determining the elements of the hydraulic jump is important while dealing with the cons-truction of high spillway dams, barrages, regulators, weirs and canal falls. In this dissertation various methods for obtain-ing hydraulic jump elements in open channel sections like rectangular, trapezoidal, parabolic, circular and tri-angular have been surveyed. These methods are based on well known momentum and continuity equations. Since many of the equations evolved are very complicated, the exact analytical solution to these problems is not possible, and considerable amount of literature has grown up suggest-ing different methods of non-dimensi oaliz ati on and provid-ing tabular or graphical methods for solution. Relative accuracy of different methods for solving elements of jump in trapezoidal channel have been studied through worked-out examples given in Chapter 3. For hydraulic jump in expanding channels various formulations have been critically reviewed in Chapter 4. The theory lacks in correlating various jump elements ana-lytically as the formulations involve jump length which has to be obtained using empirical relations whose vali-. dity for a wider range has not been tested. |
