Issue Date: 1972
Abstract: In thin study an attompt bas been mado to bring out the dovolopnent of dosign and the current practicorc for protoction of dopes of ombanhmont dams. The upstream slope is mainly protected against destructive forces of waves and do~rn.•ntro n slope against the erosive action by ruing rind atc* The nod for protection has boon highlighted by a brief account of behaviour of slope protoctions, studied by U.B.Army Corpo of Sneincoro on approximatoly 100 des. The cost of slope protection forms a considoraele percentage of the total cost of the cmbantsonte Tbo sane has been substantiated by cost data co .loctod for aozo dams The first stop in the design of upstream slope protection is dotorrsination of the extent to which tho protection is to be provided. This involves the computation or wind set up. and wave ride up. Lave ride up mainly depends upon the wave. boi€ht, roughness and perviousness of the surface and Flo of the slope.
