Abstract: The gravity dams are usually designed by gravity analysis. This method assumes linear variation of normal vertical stress which is far from the reality. This n.on al variation of stress is also effected to substantial degree by the nature of foundation rock and its elastic properties. A comprehensive review has been made in the dissertation of the work by researchers, to evaluate stresses in dams resting on different foundations of varying rigidity* Design coefficients have been given and cia rted in the tables for use of dam designers. These coefficients can be used directly for evaluating internal stresses in a dam of any heIg and base width. Figures and drawings have been prepared there these stress factors have been anticipated and stress pattern are drawn. The study was conducted for three 100 metres high. dams with downstream slopes 0.70.1, 0.7531 and 0.80:1 and resting on .rock continuum with elasticity being .0„10, 0.)+0, 1.09, 2.5 and 10.0 times the elasticity of dam concrete,. The studies were made on I B 14 701it at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur for which a computer program was developed using Gauss-Seidel iterative process for solution of simultanious equ tions. The finite element method and Gauss Seidel process are discussed. In enough detail.
