Issue Date: 1990
Abstract: In diesel engine cylinder blocks, mechanical and thermal loads act simultaneously because of high temperature involved1 the thermal stresses induced in the cylinder is expected to be significant. Several studies are available in the literature regarding the analytical and experimental stress determina-tion in the diesel engine cylinder block. Available literature regarding heat transfer, temperature distribution and stress analysis in cyl.i.nder liner has been reviewed and a summary is presented in the dissertation. Using i?i.nite Element method an analysis has been carried out for the determination of deformation, temperature and stresses in the cylinder block. A computer software based on the finite element analysis has been developed. The authencity of the program has been checked for different sample problems. The temperature and stress distribution in the cy.l.irider block have been determined using •the present program and the results have been presented. The present software gave quite accurate .results. The magnitude of thermal stresses are quite large as compared to the stresses obtained for the pressure
