Abstract: This investigation deals with variation of physical and engineering soil properties with different ranges of soil grain sizes. The different tests that have been conducted on four different ranges of soil grain sizes of main dam core material of Ramganga Project are : (a) Grain size characteristics (b) Ltterberg Limits (c) Compaction •char cteristic s (d) Permeability characteristics (e) Unconfined compression strength characteristics tf) Triaxial shear strength characteristics and (g) Consolidation_ characteristics The test results of the compaction tests indicated that the optimum moisture content does not vary appreciably with variation in. soil grain size ranges for the same compac- tive efforts and higher densities can be obtained from the soils containing higher particle sizes. For coarse grained soils, the coefficient of permeability is primarily a func- tion of void ratio and it will not vary appreciably with density and compactive efforts, when compared to the very high values under electro-osmotic conditions. The shear strength parameters c' and 0', also does not seem to vary appreciably either with different grain size ranges under the optimum moisture content and maximum Dry Density conditions. The coefficient of consolidation, cV, increases with grain size ranges under both proctor and A. 6HO compactive efforts and the variation of compression index is practically constant.
