Abstract: With the increase in Energy crisis, interest has.been:shown by scientists and engineers in harnessing alternative sources of energy such as wind, biogas mass. and the energy of small flowing streams. In many cases these sources althoughwidely and freely available in nature-cannot be used on, large scale basis for power generation.. However, small scale applicatĀ°ion needs particularly those in remote rural areas, where conventional power lines; can't be transmitted, can be met adequately'by simple generating schemes using such resources. In remote areas the choice.of generation should be such that it is low initia.: cost, robust and capable of delivering reasonable good power ou-tput with little maintenance requirements. Moreover the cost and, layout of local distrib.ution system should be economical. The single phase self excited induction generator (SEIG) serves the purpose. suitably and can be used. The present dissertation is an attempt to investigate the potential of single phase induction generator for smaLi scale power application in remote areas and also as stand by energy units for miscellaneous applications. Since single phase induction machine has two windings mainly main winding and auxiliary winding:,,, an attempt has been further made to investigate the behaviour.- of the machine using both windings. The treatment has been 'kept.experimental in '-order to obtain first head information regarding feasibility and practical (iii) difficulty In control operation which are generally not reported In simulation work. Performance characteristics relating to operation and voltage control are examined in the light experimental investigation and conclusions are presented based on these observations. The aim of the present work is to the existing knowledge on single phase SEI-G particularly from practical, operation and control point of view.
