Abstract: The area under present investigation forms a pars of the Toposheet No. 53 F`14 of the Survey of India. It lies mainly around Kalsi Town, district Dehradun, TJ,P. and is approachable by roads from Dehradun, Saharanpur and Mussoorie. The area falls about 24 mile NNE of Dehradun and 50 miles N of Saharanpur (Map No. 1) . Best exposures are seen along Haripur - Chibro and Kalsi - ChaLcrata roads. Haripur-Chibro road is a part of Dehradun-Kota road and has been built on the left bank of the Tons river which marks the boundary between Himachal Pradesh on the West and Uttar Pradesh on the east. Kalsi-Chakrata road which has been built on the right bank of the Amlana river is in fact forms a part of the Dehradun Chakrata or Mussorrie Chakrata road. I.2Cam During the major pact of the year the climate at Kalsi and adjoining area is pleasant. The area is marked by moderately warm and humid climate with annual rainfall averaging about 200 ems. Temperature in summer ranges around 20°C. The months of May and June are quite hot and temperature rises upto 30-350 C. In winters i.e. in the months of December-Fehruary, it is quite cold and temperature : 2 :- ranges from 0 to 12°C. Snow fall does not take place in this area. The rainy season starts by the end of the third week of June and continues upto the end of September. The winter rains fall from December to Mid-3anuary. The months of March, April, October and November are best suited for Geological field work in the area. 1,3 VE ET ION The nature and distribution of the flora In an area is governed by the climate, the lithological character-istics of the rock types and the amount of soil cover. The various types of plants which are of common occurrence and importance are s- Terminalia tomentosa (Bain) Terminalia belerica (Behara) Adina Cordifolia (Haldu) Bombax melabaricum (Serval) Phyllanthus emblica - (Amla) Acacia calchu (Khair) Pinus roxburghii (Chir) Mallotus phillippinenais (Rohini) Clerodendron unfortunetum (Kau) Bambusa nutans (Bans) Girardima hedrophyla (Bichchua) E •W 2 3 1- Ficus glomerata (Gular) Cudrania .Tavanersis (M anda) Mangifora indica (&n) Berberis (Her) Cultivated land forms hardly 15% of the area, are occupying the hill slopes where terrace fanj is done. Quartzites debris due to its low specific retention is inadequate for farming whereas slate debris is found to be suitable for cultivation. Some parts of the area is thickly vegetated while other parts are sp—.s vegetated. Maize and wheat are the ma:.n crops of the area long with vegetables like potatoes$ onion, ginger, etc. Soil conservation unit of U.P. Government is working for land reclamation and helping the civilization for utilisation of land for agricultural purposes....
