The Tikak colliery, Makum coal field of Assam has been used as an economic resource from decades. The coal field lies within Barail Group of Oligocene age. The proximate analysis has been done for the samples collected from the coal seams of the study area. The study implies that the representative coal samples from the study area are low quality coal of lignite variety. The ash content, moisture content and volatile matter lies c.a. >35 %, <1.5 % and >37 % respectively. As a result the values of fixed carbon ratio for various samples come around 50.67 %, 17.97 %, 6.54 %, 22.18 % and 3.46 %. These values indicate that these coals have relatively less Carbon.en_US
