Abstract: A mathematical model for direct reduction of iron ore in low shaft furnance is developed in this thesis. The low shaft furnace process is simulated as packed bed process. The model$ is developed in two parts, one for single pellet and the second for behaviour of pellets in packed bed. In case of single pellet model, reaction zone model is used in place of three interface model. On the basis of the model developed, the change in the gas tempera- •ture. with time is calculated. Moreover, the fractional reduction of iron oxide pellet with time over the whole bed, is also calculated. The calculated results are compared with the experimental results (given by Yagi et-al.). It is found that the mathematic, model presented in this thesis can well simulate the observed results.
