The limited water resources form a great challenge for the specialists in water resources engineering. This challenge is represented by "design and manage the projects" connected with water resources in such a way that insures providing suitable quantity and quality of water. In this research, optimization-simulation models were used for the systems analysis of a water resources system. The Dokan reservoir in Iraq was taken as the study system. Linear optimization model was used for estimating the maximum safe (firm) yield of a single reservoir system with allowable deficit. Two linear programming (LP) models were used, one a full optimization (complete) model, and the other a simplified optimization model called the yield model. Optimal operation of the reservoir is also performed by using a nonlinear programming (NLP) model, given a series of inflows and downstream water demand targets. The three models (linear and non-linear) were used as a preliminary screening tool. The simulation technique was used on the basis of the results obtained from LP and NLP models for further screening. Hence based on the present study it is concluded that the full optimization model is more accurate representation of system behavior from yield model but the limitation of the full optimization model is its size when multi-reservoir systems and long time periods are considered. So the choice of the model will depend upon factors like, the nature of the study, the purpose of the study and the size of problem. Based on the simulation results, water availability for the proposed irrigation and hydropower schemes were also determined. It was revealed that optimal operation policy satisfies the demands at the downstream Dokan dam - during successful years (44 year) and water deficiency was noticed during failure years.(14 yearen_US
