Abstract: Industrial plants using induction motors, thyristor rectifiers and other nonlinear power. electronic loads such as variable speed ac drives are faced with stringent requirements enforced by the utility to meet power factor and power quality requirement as these nonlinear loads draw harmonic and reactive power components of current from ac mains. Passive filters were introduced to reduce harmonics and switchable shunt capacitors were employed to improve the power factor of the ac loads. Due to the limitations in passive filters new filter technology are being explored to meet the harmonic standards. Active filters are the devices which can provide harmonic compensation dynamically. Dynamic capacitor (D-CAP) is one such device whose topology is based on the family of inverter-less active filters and is able to provide dynamically controllable capacitance with active harmonic filtering integrated into the same unit. This device is compact and cost competitive when compared with other devices. In the present report, Selective Harmonic Cultivation (SHE) technique is explained and its edge over the PWM is discussed. Results pertaining to different configurations of D-CAP are also shown.
