Abstract: .`hen a force is suddenly applied, to an elas-tic body, different particles of the body do not attain that particular stress instantaniously as cal-culated in statics. At the bogining the remote posi-tions of the body remain undisturbed, and deformation produced by the force are propagated through the body in the form of elastic waves. The effects of forces which are applied for only very shottperiods of time, or if the dimensions of the body are large the time taken by such waves to traverse the body becomes of practical importance and should be considered. The theory of propagation of elastic waves in solids was developed during the last century by Stokes Poisson, Rayliegh, Kelvin and others as an extension of the theory of elasticity to the problem of vibra-ting bodies. During the second world war the subject ob-tain a great importance and much work has been done after the war. Also the development of electronicS techniques has provided opportunity to experimenters to study the instantaneous variation that are caused by sudden changes in loading....
