Abstract: The current work reports the design and development of a strain gauge dynamometer for measuring three components of the cutting force. The force measuring elements are 4 octagonal rings on which strain gauges have been mounted to pick up the strains developed in the rings due to the cutting force. The behaviour of the rings has also been analysed theoretically to develop the proper section and size of the rings. The work also involves the calibration of dynamo-meter for the three components of the cutting forces under static load. The performance tests have also been carried out with a slab milling cutter under different cutting con-ditions on mild steel and cast iron. In order to confirm the reproducibility and consistency of results obtained by the dynamometer, an attempt has been made to correlate different component of forces with d & ft independently. It has also been suggested that a factor for microstructure should a— be included with the exponent in the relation-ship for Fx, D & Ft.
