There is increasing awareness to make full use of water resources for meeting the progressively increasing requirements of water. Groundwater which forms more than 97 percent of fresh water on earth can be tapped on a large scale, not only for drinking but also for growing vegetables fruits and crops and for various purposes in industry, it would be a big boost to the economy of a country. Application of remote sensing techniques have been successfully done for study and development in many varied fields, e.g. surveying and mapping, urban planning, geo-logical and geomorphological investigations, forest inventing, water resources planning etc. Application of remote sensing techniques for evaluation, cif groundwater potential with- the help of ground based .data can be done to know the resource in shorter time. This dissertation presents the results of water balance study in the Bhabar Tarai region of Ganga Yamuna doab using remote sensing techniques. The study was con-ducted for two years 1977 and 1978. Aerial photographs, Landsat Imagery and Computer Compatible Tape were used for analysis. Ground data was collected from the various organisations working in the field. The remote sensing techniques were used to finalize the basin characteristics and landuse. The hy" roloc~ic budget analysis was done, and an attempt was made to arriveat percolation rates for various •types of landuse. From the study for the yeir 1977 it was seen that about 29 percent of the precipitation causes croun l- water recharge in the study area. The groundwater potential for the study area was evaluated and it was observed that about 48.72 MC',en_US
