The work presented here comprises of the theoriti-- cal background of the effect of additives in lubricants on the wear and friction characteristics of metal pairs and an experimental investigation of various aspects of it. Two lubri cant s - SAE-30 and NP- 90 are used along with two additives - lead and chromium soaps in different combinations and proportions. Metal pairs investigated are "mild steel on brass", "mild steel on mild steel" and "brass on brass". The first part deals with the theories and practical importance of the phenomena of friction, wear and lubrication. The second part deals with the experimental investigation. The results thus obtained have been discussed and conclusions are drawn in the end. Scope of further work is briefly suggested.en_US
