Abstract: | A model based design approach has been applied in this dissertation for the development of the power system protection schemes. The purpose of using this approach is to obtain the digital design of power system protection devices. This approach highly accelerates the design, verification and implementation of the modern day digital systems. MATLAB Simulink has been used for the development of the model of the protection device. Simulink HDL coder has been used to generate the VHDL code of the designed model. The code generation is supported by keeping certain constraints like fixed point data type in the design during system development. This generated VHDL code is used for verification and implementation of the designed model. In the present work a directional over-current relay has been designed which is widely used in power system protection. The verification of the design is done using the codes generated from the Simulink HDL coder. An over-current relay is , also designed. The designed over-current relay follows the inverse time current characteristics as per IEEE standard C-37.112-1996. The digital simulation of the generated VHDL codes and test bench has been performed on ModelSim Digital Simulator. |
