Issue Date: 1973
Abstract: Present dissertation is an extension of the work by Wilson and Beavers, in which the operatimĀ§ modes of clarinet are analysed by assuming steady pressure inside the plenum chamber, However, because of the finite impedance of the lung, trachea, mouth system wh .ch constitutes the upstream conditions for an actual clarinets the pressure is far from steady. The effect of this upstream impedance is also taken into account and it is found that there are two types of excitable modes of operation of the system, one at a frequency near the natural fretjueneyfrequency of the reed and a second at frequencies near resonant frequency of the tube Which are lower than the reed frequency. The minimum blowing pressure, required to excite each of the modes is calculated. The analysis show's that for lightly damped reeds, the mode of operation with the frequency nearest to the reed frequency is excited at the lowest blowing pressure. The lowest resonant frequency . of the tube,, Which is the desired mode of operation of clarinet, is preference. i tially excited only when the reed is heavily damped.
