The energy needs of the utilities are increasing day by day and so do the need for uninterrupted power. Electrical distribution system, which is the largest portion of the power network, acts as a final stage of power delivery to the end users. Hence, ensuring its efficient and reliable operation is an extremely important and challenging task. Owing to its large size it is subjected to majority of faults. So, uninterrupted power can only be delivered if faults are detected, classified and located correctly, soon after the occurrence fault. Signal processing based algorithm provide a better means to. accomplish this task. With the advent of signal processing techniques like wavelet transform, protection of distribution systems is becoming easier. In the current work the application of wavelet transform for the protection of power distribution systems is discussed. To validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm it is implemented on IEEE 13 node system, 12 node system and a 6 node system. These test systems are simulated in PSCAD to generate the data for various faults. Then these signals are imported to MATLAB, where the discussed scheme is implemented and the results are summarised.en_US
