Abstract: The study of friction, wear and lubrication is of immense use in the field of modern high speed machines, which carry considerable load. In these machines the use of various types of journal bearings are inevitable. The application of lubricant in theciaarance space of the journal bearir• =reduces the friction and wear. This causes the study of lubrication more important. The modern computers has made it easier to evaluate the performance characteristics of journal bearing system having lubricant in their clearance space. A designer can perform more precise design of journal bearing system by using the more accurate design data. This thesis is an attempt to evaluate the performance characteristics in different flow regimes (laminar, transition and turbulent) of partial plain journal bearings as well as full plain journal bearings : In case of partial journal bearings the performance characteristics are evaluated for two aspect ratios (L/D = 1 and L/D = 0.5), where as for full journal bearing the void present in the previous results is completed. The static and dynamic characteristics are presented. The stability results are shown in terms of critical mass and thresh•• old speed.
