Abstract: The present work embodies the behaviour' :,, of welding speed and welding current to get the suitable weld bead profile and dimensions in welding of root passes of butt welds in Orbit-al welding of pipes using TIG welding procedure. The study reveals that for welding a given pipe of specific dimensions at constant-welding speed, the welding current should vary while welding from one. orbitalposition to the other orbital position. Similarly it is possible to weld at constant current by varying the welding speed while welding in different orbital positions. However, for closer control of weld bead dimensions it is advisable to va.r- tee both the welding speed and current in different orbital positions. The study establishes a method for developing a programme for welding speed and current variations for making a complete butt weld all along the 'circumference of the pipe in orbital welding. Such' programme may be very useful in design, manufacture and utlization of orbital welding devices.
