The problem of laying out facilities within the given confines of a site'by means of a Computer based algorithm has been attempted by quite a few people in the paste These have resulted in a large variety of methods of varying efficiency using one or two of the several criteria to be met in solving a facility location problem. The method made use of in this dissertation has been derived from past work in the field. The computer program has been developed afresh to meet the specific needs of the layout problem posed. The program is efficient and requires about 5 seconas of CPU- time on the DEC system 20. Being interactive in nature the user has options of changing the layout and can see the resultant layout on a graphics terminal. The programme is suitable for laying out facilities on a qualitative basis though it can be adapted for use when dealing with quantitative relationships between facilities.en_US
