With the advancement of digital computer technology, the microprocessor based systems are becoming more and more popular. In a 8-bit microprocessor based system, having 16-bit address bus, a total of 64K bytes of main memory can be accessed directly. Within the 64K bytes address space, some address space for ROM can be reserved for storing utility programs as a non-volatile storage medium. For the ease of using microprocessor based systems, many system software programs, such as, Assembler, editor, debugger, compiler etc., are to be provided and in such a case the Floppy Disks are the universal non-volatile storage media. With the system having Floppy Disk as the non-volatile storage medium, an operating system is necessary for Disk file management and software development. In the present work, a Floppy Disk Drive has been interfaced with 8085 microprocessor based system (in non-DMA mode) and CP/M operating system has been implemented to form a micro-computer development system. in the first chapter, a brief description of interfacing techniques, Floppy Drive system and Vinytics MDS has been given. The second chapter deals with the description of the Floppy Drive Controller (FDC) card used. The software development for Formatting a floppy, Reading a sector and writing a sector, along with other supporting routines are given in the third chapter. The fourth chapter describes the implementation of CP/M V2.2 operating system. The utility routines available in CP/M based microcomputer are detailed in the fifth chapter. In the sixth chapter, conclusion and scope for further development of the work are listed. A brief description of 8272, the Floppy Drive Controller, and the listing of the software routines developed for the present work are given in Appendices.en_US
