Abstract: The society has been ever more demanding on the engineering profession for efficient and reliable delivery of services and systems. In perticular, great social, cultural and technological advances in the past two centuries have contributed to the demand for a rational framework for discriminating be-tween alternative designs and to ensure certain minimum safety standards in engineered systems. Use of energy balance criterion holds a better option in development of earthquake resistant design methodology. Development of energy based earthquake resistant design contains three stages. In current study, an equivalent 2-DOF oscillator system is proposed for first stage of energy based earthquake resistant design. The hysteretic energy is used to set the equivalence between proposed model and original structure. Three space frames of different stories were considered for this study. By perform-ing the non-linear time history analysis for a suit of selected ground motions, hysteretic energy is obtained. An optimization algorithm is developed for estimating the mass and stiffness properties of proposed equivalent system. By using these properties the equivalence relationship between the proper-ties of original structure and the proposed system can be developed, which can be used as an alternative earthquake resistant design methodology to conventional design methods.
