Earthquake resistant analysis of nine storied building having symmetrical square plan with a shear wall has been carried out using ETABS version 9. The building is resting on hard soil and is located in zone V. Analysis is carried out using guidelines of IS 1983: 2002. The frames and shear wall are designed as special moment resisting frame using IS 13920: 1993; Four reinforced concrete buildings: Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV are considered for the analysis and design. The 'Type' of building indicates the amount of the base shear carried by the shear wall provided in the building. The distribution of the base shear to the shear walls of Type I, Type II, Type. III and Type IV buildings are, respectively, taken as 66 %, 65 %, 70 % and 75 % of the total base shear. These buildings are, analysed and designed as per IS code provisions. The quantities structural steel and concrete required for each building is computed. For the computation purpose, the quantities of the steel and concrete required in beams, columns and shear walls have only been considered. The cost of steel and concrete required for each building is computed by taking cost of steel as Rs. 42.64 / kg and the cost of concrete as 4927.49 / m3. The comparison of the structural cost is also made. The typical designs'of beam, column and shear wall are also given.en_US
