The structural cost, i.e., the cost of structural steel and concrete in RC building depends on the dead load and imposed load that a building is required to resist. When the building is to be designed to -resist earthquake load, the earthquake loads applied as equivalent lateral loads at various floor levels along with the dead load and the percentage of imposed load. The magnitude of lateral loads depends on the seismic weight of the building, seismic zone in which the building is located, importance of the building, the type of soil on which it is supported and the lateral load resisting system of the building. Four types of RC buildings are considered for analysis and design: i) Special Moment Resisting Frames (SMRF) with concrete bracings for DBE condition is designated as Type I building, ii) Special Moment Resisting Frames (SMRF) without concrete bracings for DBE condition is designated as Type II building iii) Special Moment Resisting Frames (SMRF) with concrete bracings for MCE condition is designated as Type III building and iv) Special Moment Resisting Frames (SMRF) without concrete bracings for MCE condition is designated as Type IV These four buildings are analyzed and designed as per IS 456: 2000, IS 1893 (Part 1): 2002 and IS 13920: 1993. The structural members: beams, columns and bracings are designed and the quantities of steel and concrete required for each type of building is calculated by taking the cost of steel as Rs, 46.00 per kg and the cost of concrete as Rs. 4297.50 per cubic meter. The structural economics, i.e., comparison of the structural cost for these buildings, is studied. Further, the time periods of each building, storey displacement and drift are also obtained.en_US
