Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as the recent wave of wireless technology which combine sensing, processing and communication through tiny low power and low cost sensor nodes (SNs). These WSNs have made distributed sensing across a vast area very easy without, the placement of any wires and more accurate results. For the last few years, WSNs have been used in many practical applications.. Last few years have seen a great boom in the usage of WSNs in many practical systems. Our work also concentrates on the usage of WSN in systems that are smart enough to solve certain problems faced by the society. The problems that we considered are intrusions in homes/offices, assisted living, public transport issues and precision agriculture. In this dissertation, we have designed and established a prototype for each of the problems given above. A security system has been designed that can be installed in offices/homes,.can identify intrusions/fire and other abnormal situations and can inform the owner about this on his mobile phone. A mobile assisted living system has been designed that allows patients to live independently while continuously monitoring them and brings any abnormal situation to the attention of nursing home so that appropriate action can be taken immediately. A system has been designed to solve the annoying facts about the public transport that pulls passengers off from using public transport. A system has been designed for precision agriculture monitoring and control. The system maintains favorable environment for the growth of crops during their different growth periods without much human intervention. In all the system, WSNs make the implementation and setup much easier because of their easy establishment and robust nature.en_US
