| Abstract: | AC-DChybrid microgrids are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to integrate different types of distributed energy resources (DERs) and improve overall grid resilience. However, protection of these systems poses unique challenges due to the presence of multiple power sources and loads. In this paper, we propose a protection scheme for an AC-DC hybrid microgrid using Impedance Based Differential Protection for the DC grid and Impedance Angle-Based Differential Protection for the AC grid. The Impedance Based Differential Protection scheme detects faults in the DC grid by measuring the impedance difference between two zones, while the Impedance Angle-Based Differential Protection scheme detects faults in the AC grid by measuring the difference in impedance angle between two feeders. The proposed protection scheme provides reliable and selective protection for the AC-DC hybrid microgrid, enabling quick detection and isolation of faults and reducing the risk of cascading failures. The effectiveness of the proposed protection scheme is evaluated through simulation studies, and the results demonstrate its effectiveness in detecting and isolating faults in the AC-DC hybrid microgrid. Overall, the proposed protection scheme can contribute to the safe and reliable operation of AC-DC hybrid microgrids, promoting their integration into the larger power grid and facilitating the transition towards a more sustainable energy future. Overall, the proposed protection scheme can contribute to the safe and reliable operation of AC-DC hybrid microgrids, promoting their integration into the larger power grid and facilitating the transition towards a more sustainable energy future. Further research and development in protection schemes for hybrid microgrids can help to enhance their resilience, stability, and efficiency. |
