Abstract: This thesis discusses in detail the Non-structural elements, their types, design specification, current practices and earthquakes effect on the same. The Non Structural elements pertains to about 70% of the building cost and the lesser concern given to their design is the main cause for the widespread damage to life and property during an earthquake. It also includes different literature of the work on the seismic safety of Non Structural elements in a building. The report contains the study of failure of Non Structural elements mainly partition wall . The analysis is done using codal analysis and the results are also calculated using Linear Time History Analysis in ETABS. The result are further compared to analyse how the codal value underestimate the demand on NSE’s .The effect on the displacement profile of the five storey buildings due to infill is also studied. The effect of infill on the floor acceleration demand on the NSE’s is also done by comparing the floor acceleration spectrum thus calculated for the two buildings. Further two case studies has been done for studying the performance of Non Structural elements during big earthquakes and remedies for prevention of damage has also been discussed. The main aim of this report is to study the failure of Non Structural elements and shed light on the importance of the design of Non Structural elements of a buildings which are otherwise not given much importance while building of a structure.
