Title: DEGRADATION OF FURFURAL AND 5-HYDROXY METHYL FURFURAL USING Lentibacillus salarius BPIITR

Abstract: Furanic compounds (HMF and furfural) are generated during hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials and act as inhibitor to various microorganism growth and their product formation. Studies have shown that some microorganism possess the ability to degrade the furanic compounds via adaptive or induced pathways in which there is step wise breakdown of furanic compound leading to the formation of an intermediate which then enters in the Krebs/TCA cycle for energy production. In current study, experiments were aimed to identify influence of these furanic compounds on halophilic bacteria Lentibacillus salarius BPIITR growth and lipid production potential. In presence of furfural and 5 hydroxy methyl furfural at 1.5 g/L during initial growth improved the growth rate compared to control. Further, furfural and hmf reductase activity were measured and the results are 241156 IU/mL or 3653.9 IU/mg and 43858 IU/mL or 6925.1 IU/mg, respectively. The lipid yield was 22.38 % dcw and 30.98 % dcw compared to 15.07 % dcw in control. These results further elucidate the ability of Lentibacillus salarius BPIITR to assimilate furfural and 5-hydroxy methyl furfural in their energy metabolism and accumulation high valued lipids.
